Stop Algae in Ponds

(Using Plants, Not Chemicals – What Works for Us)

Algae is one of the most common pond issues in Cairns and Far North Queensland. Warm water, strong sunlight and nutrient build-up create ideal conditions for algae to appear quickly.

This blog isn’t a promise that algae will never happen.
I still get algae in some of my ponds — and when I do, it’s almost always a sign of imbalance.

This is simply what I do, what I look for, and what generally works for me in tropical conditions.

Algae Is Usually a Sign of Imbalance

In my experience, algae tends to show up when:

there aren’t enough plants

too much sunlight is getting into the water

plants aren’t growing strongly

the system hasn’t settled yet

Algae isn’t always a problem on its own — it’s usually telling you something needs adjusting.

A Healthy Pond Works as an Ecosystem

Instead of treating algae directly, I focus on building a balanced ecosystem.

That means using plants at different levels of the pond so nutrients and sunlight are being managed naturally.

When the balance improves, algae usually reduces on its own.

Underwater Plants – The Base Layer

Underwater plants are important because they:

absorb nutrients directly from the water
support fish health
help stabilise water quality
Fish contribute nutrients to the system, and underwater plants help use those nutrients before algae gets the chance.

When this layer is missing or weak, algae often appears more quickly.

Floating Plants – Managing Sunlight

Floating plants covering part of the water surface (not full coverage)

In Cairns, sunlight is one of the biggest triggers for algae.

Floating plants help by:

shading the water
reducing water temperature
slowing algae growth naturally

I aim for partial coverage, not a completely covered pond. Too little shade invites algae, but too much shade can affect water movement and plant health.

Above-Water & Marginal Plants

Plants growing around the pond edges or above the water line

Above-water plants provide:

extra shade
nutrient uptake from the soil
more stability around the pond

They also help block reflected sunlight, which can still contribute to algae growth.

Why I Avoid Chemical Algae Treatments

Chemical algae treatments may clear water quickly, but in warm tropical conditions they often don’t fix the underlying imbalance. In my experience they usually need repeated use and can disturb fish and other beneficial organisms in the pond. Because of that, I prefer adjusting plant balance first before reaching for chemical solutions.

This Is What Works for Me

This is based purely on my own experience managing ponds in Cairns conditions. I still get algae in some ponds from time to time, and when that happens it’s usually because plants haven’t filled in yet, sunlight exposure has changed, or the overall ecosystem is out of balance. Adjusting plant coverage, particularly underwater and floating plants, usually makes the biggest difference. There’s no single solution that works for every pond, but building balance across all plant levels has been the most reliable approach for me.
